Robert Gorman announced today that he is a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for U.S. Representative in The 11th District of Illinois.

Gorman, a long time resident of the region, said, “ For too many years, the people of our area have been ill served by the incumbent – a virtual expatriate representative.”

“The incumbent’s lack of attention to the area – excepting only election periods – is virtually unprecedented…he is effectively the Republican Party’s Adam Clayton Powell,” said Gorman. “Instead of dealing with the major issues impacting our country and district, issues like the war in Iraq, he is off in foreign countries developing land.”

“Not only is he off developing land, but he is in violation of the Congressional Ethics rules which require the disclosure of such items. Of course, disclosure might have hurt his chances of getting CAFTA (Central America Free Trade Agreement) approved in Congress which passed with only a two-vote margin.” According to the Chicago Tribune, CAFTA included additional legal protection for American investors, including those who have purchased lots from Weller.

According to Gorman, “if my opponent would rather be developing land in Nicaragua, he should give up being a congressman and develop real estate full-time…and I am happy to be able to help him do just that.”

Gorman is no newcomer to politics. He once ran for the Republican nomination for Congress and garnered the endorsements of the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Daily News. He is a former Republican Committeeman in Thornton Township. Thornton Township is one of the largest townships in Illinois and regularly has greater vote totals than all but three or four counties. In Cook County, township committeemen are elected by the voters unlike in the rest of the state where they are elected by precinct committeemen.

When asked about his Republican background and now running for the Democratic nomination Gorman said, “The world has changed since I was active in Republican politics. The Republican Party is no longer a party of inclusiveness, but one of exclusiveness. I am a moderate, I am financially conservative, but have liberal tendencies on the social front. I feel entirely comfortable within the Democratic Party. In fact, the very first election I worked in was for John F. Kennedy while I was still in high school.”

Gorman indicated that persons interested in joining his campaign should contact him at 708-799-4200, or by email at rcgorman@gormangrp.com.
