Gorman Charges Republicans with Duplicity After years of relentless spending on favorite projects, the Republicans are trying to create an image of fiscal restraint by voting against modest proposals that will help the middle class, such as reducing interest rates on student loans. The House and Senate voted on Friday September 7th to revise the student loan program. Gorman, whose daughter is a student in law school, said the cost of college and post college education has become so extravagant that kids are graduating with loan debts of $20,000 to $50,000, and more. “I know how much college costs”, said Gorman, “I put a son and daughter through the University of Illinois. Apparently the Republicans are too busy lowering interest rates for big business and banks to worry about education Gorman supports legislation that increases the maximum Pell grant, which would go to the poorest college students, from $4,310 a year to $5,400 a year by 2012, and would cut interest rates on federally backed student loans to poor and middle-class students from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent over the next four years. This was a Democratic initiative that was supported by House Democrats -- but opposed by the incumbent’s GOP colleagues. “It is quite clear that, even for modest proposals, the Republican Party has no sympathy for middle class students or parents,” said Gorman. “This is the type of legislation I will support when elected.” |
